University's first phase in 2009

The Vedanta group would see that every family before its displacement gets a suitable and better living conditions along with employment for one of its members in the proposed Vedanta University project, said Ajit Kumar Samal, vice-president of the project at a meet-the-Press programme organised by the Puri Press Club on Saturday.

The willing and educated persons of about 80 families, likely to be displaced, would be imparted capacity building training to absorb them in the project.

"We are ready to provide compensation amount as soon as the Government appoints a committee to fix the quantum," Samal said, adding, "We have given over Rs 5 crore to the Puri district administration for initial work."

Replying to a question, he said the university would generate tremendous employment opportunities and business scope for the people of Puri.

The first phase of the project would begin in the 2009 academic session with 3,500 students, and by the end of this decade the university would be complete in all respects with facility for one lakh resident students, Samal said.

Over 50 per cent of the seats in various faculties would be filled up by meritorious Indian students.

Meritorious and outstanding students would be accommodated even if they are unable to afford the fees, he said, adding the university would maintain international standard in various subjects, right from agriculture and research to genetic engineering.

The university would also have facilities for research in pharma and allied sector. It would nurture sportspersons and games through its ultramodern stadium and sporting facility. The international standard teaching would help create Nobel laureates, he added.

As far as I know land acquisition is not complete.
