Vedanta will offer bachelor's, graduate, post-graduate and doctoral programs with world-renowned faculty driving the academic and research agenda with a commitment to pioneering pedagogy, cross-disciplinary study, need-blind admissions, unparalleled access to information, indigenous leadership, and world-class diversified scholarship. Vedanta University expects to begin enrolling students in 2008 with the campus development proceeding in accordance with a phased-in process, with a planned completion date of 2025.
Vedanta University will be located on a scenic 8,000 acre campus in the eastern state of Orissa, along the Bay of Bengal. The government of Orissa has committed full support to Vedanta University, sharing the vision of creating an academic center that will be among the best in the world and the first such university in India. The prominent Baltimore architectural firm of Ayers Saint Gross has been hired to design the campus master plan and develop architectural guidelines.
The Provost and Chief Academic Officer (CAO) is the first academic position to be filled in the creation of Vedanta University. This position will be the key driver in the development and implementation of the academic program over the next two to three years. The CAO will provide leadership, vision and coordination for all academic planning and activities. He or she will be responsible for developing the core academic plan, which will include sequencing of schools and programs, overseeing creation of curriculum, establishing and implementing the timetable for hiring deans and faculty and recruiting students for a 2008 start date, developing strategies for attracting a global permanent and visiting faculty, determining academic governance policies, and ensuring the provision of appropriate academic resources. The CAO will be expected to recruit his or her own staff and bring on board the necessary consulting resources to move the initial agenda forward.
The CAO will be an academic leader of vision, intellectual breadth, recognized accomplishment, and reputation with the academic planning skills needed to implement the vision of a world-class research-intensive multidisciplinary private university for the 21st century from the ground up. The successful candidate will be a creative and strategic thinker with a bold and adventuresome spirit that is drawn to the creation of a new enterprise. He or she will likely have some previous experience in the creation of an academic center, school, campus, or other entrepreneurial venture. The CAO will have experience working within a research university based on the American or British model and understand the needs and drivers of high-quality research. The CAO must be of sufficient stature to attract high quality faculty to teach and do research. It is important for the individual to have a sophisticated understanding of Indian mores and to have spent some time in India.
